About Me

I wrote my first poem at age six and continued to write poetry throughout college. After graduating with a BA in communications and a concentration in journalism, I’ve continuously found new ways to channel my skills. I’ve worked as a writer and editor at several blogs, an event planner and server for a small organic tea house and a sales associate for several retail stores. All of these positions have taught me that a career path isn’t just straightforward, but rather a zigzag, scrawling line that sometimes circles back before it moves forward. I’m not just a writer and an editor - I'm a explorer and an idea wrangler.

Sometimes life seems to move by so sluggishly and other days, it flashes by. In those fleeting moments, I feel like I'm trying to grasp each second and remember it before it escapes me. I want to remember everything, so I have something good to remind myself of on bad days. Recently, I had one of those moments.

Cutting Loose: On Extracting Myself From Corporate Retail

Since my last post, there have been some new and happier changes in my life. Of course, I was upset about getting fired. But surprisingly, I managed to find a new job within less than two weeks. Before I applied for the new job, I put a lot of thought into my schedule and how I wanted to spend my time. I had discussed it with Sam and my mother, one of the smartest and most rational people I know. Should I remain unemployed, struggling financially, while I go through another wave of cover letters and resumes? Or should I just jump in and get another part-time job?

On a whim, I applied to a clothing and home store that I had always really liked. The handful of times I had shopped there in the past, I had come away feeling like the employees were friendly and the atmosphere was fun. Within an hour of hitting submit on my resume, the owner of the store called me. A few days later, I went in for an interview and got the job. Two months later, I'll admit that although it's been a whirlwind, I really enjoy it.

The Worst First: Getting Fired and Getting Over It

Rejection is inevitable, unavoidable and pretty unbearable. I've experienced all kinds of rejection- breakups, jobs and even friend breakups. But the one type I've never experienced is the rejection of being fired. I've left many jobs, but I've never been fired from a job in my entire life. Last week, I was fired from one of my two retail jobs. Not only that- my manager fired me over text message.

At The Bottom of the Pyramid

This post is a long one (what else is new?), so bear with me, I have a point. About two months ago, I landed on a site that posted temporary jobs and wound up applying to a Special Events and Marketing position. The required skills were ones I already had and it sounded vaguely promising. Maybe it won't lead to anything, I thought, but it could be something else to pad my resume. I sent off my application and forgot about it.

The next day, I received an email from an HR assistant, requesting me to come in for an interview. The 'o' in the logo had a tie and a banner along the bottom featured airplanes flying over land, with the text in the email enclosed in subdued purple and yellow. My immediate thought was that there was something fishy about this. Getting a reply the day after I applied for the job was just too good to be true. Or was I being too cynical? I asked Sam, my boyfriend, and then for extra security, I forwarded the information to a woman that I dog sit for, who had recently been mentoring me in my job search. Both Sam and her agreed that it was suspicious, but thought it couldn't hurt to meet them.

Float On: Not Okay

Not too long ago, I was sitting in a cafe before work, drinking tea and making a to-do list. It was still early, although the barista and I had been chatting a bit, I was letting her get on with her morning routine, as she was letting me get on with mine. As I got up to leave, I said goodbye and she said, "Bye India, don't float away now." I stopped and looked at her for a second, slightly put off and then stuttered out some absurd, superficial reply before exiting.
